Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a widely recognized and evidence-based approach to treating individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disorders. It is a comprehensive and systematic method that focuses on analyzing and modifying behavior using principles of learning and behavior.

ABA therapy aims to increase desirable behaviors and decrease problematic or challenging behaviors by breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps. It emphasizes positive reinforcement and uses a data-driven approach to measure progress and make informed decisions.

Behavioral assessment

A thorough assessment is conducted to identify specific behaviors, their functions, and their antecedents (events or circumstances that trigger the behavior) and consequences (what follows the behavior).

Individualized treatment plan

ABA programs are tailored to the unique needs of each individual. Goals are established based on the assessment and may focus on language and communication skills, social skills, academic abilities, self-help skills, or reducing challenging behaviors.

Breaking down skills

Complex skills are broken down into smaller, achievable steps. This process is called task analysis. Each step is taught individually and gradually built upon to promote skill acquisition.

Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a fundamental component of ABA therapy. It involves providing rewards or preferred items when desired behaviors are exhibited, which increases the likelihood of those behaviors recurring in the future. Reinforcement can be in the form of praise, access to preferred activities, or tangible rewards.

Data collection and analysis

ABA therapy relies on continuous data collection to measure progress and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. This data helps us make informed decisions, modify strategies, and track improvements over time.

Generalisation and maintenance

ABA therapy aims to promote the generalization of skills, meaning that learned behaviors are demonstrated across different settings, with different people, and in various situations. Maintenance involves ensuring that acquired skills are retained and continues to be utilized over an extended period.

Family involvement

ABA therapy recognizes the importance of involving families in the treatment process. You are provided with support to reinforce skills outside of therapy sessions and create a consistent environment that supports your child’s progress.
