The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an evidence-based, comprehensive early intervention program designed specifically for young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) between the ages of 12 and 48 months. It combines principles from applied behavior analysis (ABA) with developmental and relationship-based approaches to promote learning and social-emotional development.
Naturalistic and play-based approach
ESDM utilizes naturalistic teaching strategies and play-based activities to engage children in a developmentally appropriate and enjoyable manner. We focus on creating a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages active participation and social interaction.
Individualized curriculum
Our program tailors interventions to meet the unique needs of your child. It involves a comprehensive assessment to identify your child’s strengths, challenges, and developmental goals. Based on this assessment, an individualized curriculum is designed to target specific areas of development, including social communication, play skills, language and cognitive skills, and adaptive behaviors.
Focus on social communication
ESDM places a strong emphasis on promoting social communication skills in children with ASD. We include strategies such as joint attention, imitation, turn-taking, and promoting social engagement with caregivers and peers. The goal is to enhance social interactions and reciprocal communication abilities.
A relationship-based approach
The model emphasizes building a positive and nurturing relationship between the child and the therapist. Our focus is on creating a secure and trusting environment where your child feels comfortable and motivated to engage in learning activities.
Data-driven decision making
Like ABA, ESDM uses data collection and analysis to track progress and make informed decisions about intervention strategies. Data is collected regularly to monitor the child’s progress toward goals, identify areas of strength and areas needing further development, and make adjustments to the intervention as needed.
Integration of developmental domains
ESDM aims to address multiple areas of development simultaneously. We recognize that skills in different domains, such as communication, social interaction, cognition, and self-help, are interrelated and can be targeted together within the context of natural play-based activities.
The Early Start Denver Model has shown promising outcomes in improving social communication, language skills, cognitive abilities, and adaptive behaviors in young children with ASD. The model can be delivered in a variety of settings, including homes, clinics, and early intervention programs.
